Objectives

The LOMBOK team is generating comprehensive information on the patterns and congruence of biogeochemistry and biodiversity across a tropical land-use gradient, and will also elucidate the mechanisms underlying those patterns. The resulting information will be used to create realistic policy and management scenarios.

To achieve this, we have six main specific Objectives:

  1. Quantify soil CO2, N2O, CH4 and VOC fluxes across a gradient of tropical land-use intensity.
  2. Generate predictive models of CH4, N2O, VOC fluxes and soil CO2 efflux using the JULES land surface model, and compare modelled values with those obtained empirically.
  3. Explore the relationship between the structure and composition of soil microbial communities and biogeochemical cycles and fluxes.
  4. Investigate the consequences of variations in aboveground diversity for belowground microbial communities and their activity, using manipulative experiments.
  5. Build datasets on the distribution of species of conservation concern across the focal landscape, to explore relationships between diversity and observed/ modelled levels of ecosystem functioning.
  6. Explore realistic policy scenarios to optimise biodiversity and ecosystem function and ecosystem service provision within the focal landscape and more widely in human-modified tropical regions.
